3. Exhaust Restrictions

  • Blocked Catalytic Converter or Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF): If the DPF is full and unable to complete a regeneration cycle, or if a catalytic converter has melted internally, exhaust gases back up and choke the engine.

4. Sensor Failures

  • Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor: A dirty or failing MAF sensor miscalculates the amount of air entering the engine, ruining the air-fuel ratio.
  • Clogged MAP Sensor / Intake Manifold: Modern diesel manifolds (like the 1VD-FTV V8) build up a thick layer of soot over time, severely restricting airflow.
  • Fuel Rail Pressure Sensor: Faulty readings can trick the ECU into limiting fuel pressure to protect the engine.

5. "Limp Mode" (Protection Mode)

If the ECU detects a serious fault (such as high coolant temperature, transmission issues, or severe boost anomalies), it will deliberately restrict engine RPM and power to prevent catastrophic damage. Check for an active Check Engine light, Trac Off, or 4LO flashing lights on the dash.
